Dysmenorrhoea

Dysmeorrhoea is the term used to describe unbearable menstrual cramps. Regular menstrual pains caused before or during the first couple of days in the menstrual cycle is known as primary dysmenorrhea. Pain caused due to the occurance of endometriosis or fibroids is known as secondary dysmenorrhea.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the lower abdomen near the uterus that radiates to the lower back and legs
  • Headaches
  • Lack of appetite
  • Diarrhoea or constipation
  • Premenstrual symptoms, such as tender breasts and a swollen abdomen, which may continue throughout the period

Causes

Primary Dysmenorrhoea

In this situation, the uterus works harder than normal to break down its lining resulting in contractions that lead to pain.

Secondary Dysmenorrhoea

Endometriosis – the cells lining the uterus can move to other areas of the pelvis, causing severe pain during periods

Fibroids – benign tumours made of muscle and tissue can grow inside the uterus and are thought to be affected by the sex hormone estrogen

Treatment

Homeopathy can greatly help relieve dysmenorrhea. The medicines are known to identify the cause and reduce the amount of pain. The patient’s case history is studied and depending on the root cause for dysmenorrhea, along with accompanying physiological and psychological factors, treatment is administered.
